Making Time for Reflection

January is the time of year we reflect on our wins and losses from the prior year, and look forward to the new year ahead. What I have often wondered is why we don’t force ourselves to pause more frequently to reflect?
A recent Harvard Business Review blog post,
The Best Way to Use the Last Five Minutes of Your Day, outlines a simple daily routine to reflect on what’s working and what’s not. The blog author, Peter Bregman, suggests that each day, before leaving the office or on your drive home, you should ask yourself the following questions:
-
How did the day go? What success did I experience? What challenges did I endure?
-
What did I learn today? About myself? About others? What do I plan to do differently, or the same, tomorrow?
-
Who did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question? Share feedback?
Last week, the FirstPerson leadership team spent several days offsite planning for 2011; and each day we took time to walk through these questions. What a difference it made! I am convinced that by using this simple strategy for reflection, we all win.
