Michael Piercefield With the passage of the "Affordable Care Act," employers are being forced to consider self-funding with more diligence. As the bill is currently written, it seems that employers with more than 100 lives will be better off self-funding their medical plans beginning in 2014. There is a lot to consider before choosing self-funding - our team is here to help.

Scott ThompsonEmployers that self-fund their health plan do so for a number of reasons:
  • Flexibility in plan design
  • Increased access to health plan data
  • Elimination of the risk charge (typical with a fully-insured contract)
However, while cutting out the risk charge from insurance companies helps employers save money, it also means that the employer now bears the risk for the health and claims of their employees.  Therefore, maintaining a comprehensive wellness strategy is important for a self-funded employer.
